Mrs. Santa Maria Magdalena, a full-time mother, juggles the varied needs of a toddler, two school-aged children, and a recent high school graduate seeking employment (which is a challenge in itself). Add to that the financial strain of her husband’s irregular income as an on-call construction labourer, and the picture becomes even more complex. The family's finances are a careful balancing act, prioritizing education, basic necessities, and the needs of their youngest child.
Their home was a constant battle against the elements. The rainy season exacerbated their living conditions, as their house often leaked, allowed rainwater to seep in and created an uncomfortable living environment. She was particularly worried about her children’s health, especially their toddler who is susceptible to illnesses due to exposure to cold and damp conditions.
Despite these hardships, Mrs. Santa Maria Magdalena's dedication to her family's well-being never wavered. She managed the household with unwavering strength, nurturing her children and holding onto the hope of a brighter future.
Thankfully, a turning point and assistance arrived for the family in late 2024. Through the collaborative support of Habitat for Humanity Singapore, Indonesia, and the generous contributions of Australian International School Parents Association (AISPA), Mrs. Santa Maria Magdalena's family finally has a safe and comfortable home. The leaky roof and damp conditions are now a thing of the past, replaced by a sturdy structure that offers security and peace of mind. The completed home was handed over to the family before Christmas last year.
"I am grateful to AISPA who has donated to support building our house so that it is healthier and more comfortable raising our four children," she shared. “For the first time, we can also make Christmas cookies in a new house. I am grateful to God and may God bless the volunteers and people who have built this home."
Every mother needs to know her children have a safe place to call home. This story underscores the impact a stable home and shelter can provide. Beyond the bricks and mortar, this new home represents a foundation of hope, a space where Mrs. Santa Maria Magdalena's family can thrive and build their futures.
