A Silent Struggle with Bedbugs

Updated: Nov 15

Mr Sim had been quietly battling a severe bedbug infestation in his home, a one-room rental flat which he shares with his brother. Despite the persistent pests, he had relied on manually squashing bedbugs and using bug sprays. This resulted in blood stains on the walls of the home and efforts to exterminate them proved unsuccessful.

With the support of a social worker and a team of volunteers from Habitat for Humanity Singapore, Mr Sim embarked on a three-session intensive home rehabilitation programme. Together, they tackled the infestation by discarding infested furniture, engaging professional fumigation services, deep cleaning the living space, sealing cracks and repainting walls, and providing the brothers with new mattresses, bedframes and simple storage drawers.

Throughout the process, Mr Sim remained cheerful and engaged, sharing stories and laughter with the volunteers. He expressed gratitude for their assistance and even shared life lessons he had gathered over the years. Between scheduled rehabilitation sessions, Mr Sim had actively mended other areas of the home and tidied up the space.

Mr Sim’s resilience and positive attitude made it a pleasure to work with him. It was truly rewarding to be part of his journey to a safe and sanitary home.
